Underground Storage Tanks (UST)
Program provides environmental site assessment services to state agencies
Since the discovery that underground storage tanks (USTs) can rust and leak, the removal and replacement of USTs has been an ongoing activity throughout the nation. The CGS has offered extended technical expertise in removal, monitoring, and characterization of UST sites to other State of Colorado government agencies. Petroleum products from leaking USTs may contaminate shallow ground water, possibly moving into surface water, and can pose a direct threat to water supplies. Where contamination has occurred, the CGS has conducted additional investigation to determine the threat to human health and environment. The basic steps to an investigation include:
- a search of available environmental records and historical aerial photographs,
- a site visit,
- interviews with current and/or past personnel and
- a report summarizing the results of the investigation.
